WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School girls’ lacrosse team’s historic victory Thursday over 10th seeded Wachusett – the first playoff win in the program’s recent memory – set up an exciting Bombers’ lax quarterfinals double header of sorts, all within a nine-mile radius.
On Saturday, seventh seeded Westfield (14-4) will travel to Longmeadow to take on the mighty No. 2 Lancers (19-1) in girls’ lacrosse action at 4 p.m. Later that night in Wilbraham, No. 3 Minnechaug (14-5) will host No. 6 Westfield (12-7) in what figures to be an epic battle of top shelf boys’ lax teams. Game time is set for 7:30.
The action continues Monday when the top-seeded Westfield High baseball team (14-6) hosts the winner of No. 8 Longmeadow (12-8)/No. 9 Pittsfield (11-9) in a D1 quarterfinal at 4 p.m.
In Division 1 softball, No. 5 Westfield (12-7) travels to Northampton to play the fourth-seeded Blue Devils (16-4).
Later that evening, at 7 p.m., the two-time defending Westfield Bombers’ boys’ volleyball team, the D1 tournament’s top team, hosts No. 5 West Springfield (12-7).
SAINTS: No. 2 St. Mary (18-2) will collide with No. 10 Pathfinder (14-7) in the second of two baseball games at Bullens Field Monday. The visiting Pioneers are coached by Westfield native Don Irzyk, a long-time fixture on the local baseball scene, setting the stage for a memorable matchup. First pitch is at 7.
RAMS: On Tuesday, No. 2 Southwick (16-4) will meet No. 3 Wahconah (14-6) in a Division 2 softball semifinal at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Game time is 5 p.m.
