12:04 a.m.: assist other police department, West Springfield police request that city officers be on the lookout for a vehicle believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run crash in their city, a patrol officer reports he observed a vehicle operating westbound on East Main Street without tires on two wheel rims, the vehicle was stopped and the operator displayed the classic symptoms of alcohol intoxication, the woman failed a field sobriety test, Bridgett A. Barna, 24, of 11 Day Ave., was arrested for operating under the influence of liquor and for reckless operation of a motor vehicle, the vehicle was towed to the police impound yard, West Springfield police were advised;
2:01 a.m.: assist other police department, Westfield State University, 577 Western Ave., WSU police report a DPW sign has been recovered on campus, the responding officer reports the sign was transferred to the DPW;
4:02 a.m.: vandalism, Court Street, a patrol officer reports she discovered that a bank’s sign had been ripped out of the ground;
4:23 a.m.: breaking and entering, Green Avenue at Hampden Street, a caller reports an unattended vehicle is parked on Green Avenue with the door open and the hazard lights activated, the responding officer reports the windshield of the SUV had been smashed and contraband was found on the front seat, the incident remains under investigation;
10:04 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, North Elm Street, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the officer reports he immediately detected an odor of marijuana and the operator attempted and passed a field sobriety test, the man surrendered a pipe containing marijuana residue and a city ordinance violation citation was issued;
12:09 p.m.: vandalism, Washington Street, the manager of a dormitory-style apartment building came to the station to report vandalism to an apartment, the responding officer reports the damages reported were documented and the incident remains under investigation;
2:20 p.m.: fire, Fowler Road, a caller reports a brush fire, the responding firefighters report that a resident’s unauthorized burn pile ignited grass which approached a house where a resident inhaled smoke, the fire was extinguished and the resident who had inhaled smoke was transported to Noble Hospital for evaluation;
2:58 p.m.: fire, East Mountain Road, a caller reports a brush fire, the responding firefighters report that a resident was using a garden hose in an attempt to keep his unauthorized burn pile from spreading both toward the tree line and his house, the firefighters report about a half acre was charred, the fire was extinguished;
5:50 p.m.: officer wanted, Birchwood Lane, a caller reports a neighbor told him that a man had been seen tapping his birch trees, the officer learned that birch sap is made into a cleansing tonic by certain ethnicities, the suspect was identified and the resident was provided the forms to mail the man a ‘No trespassing’ order, see 9:28 p.m. entry;
6:54 p.m.: disturbance, Miller Street, a caller reports a college aged party is disturbing the peace, the responding officer reports the tenants were entirely cooperative and about 100 guests were dispersed, the tenants policed up trash left behind by the gathering;
9:28 p.m.: officer wanted Birchwood Lane, multiple callers report a man has been tapping birch trees, the responding officer reports a resident said that he told a man who had tapped two birch trees on his property to leave, officers found the suspect who became unruly and swung a drill with a drill bit attached at the officers, the man refused to submit to the officers and physical force was required to take him into custody, officers suffered minor injuries before an electronic control device was employed and the man was subdued, Yuriy A. Kontsemal, 25, of 36 Shannon Lane, was arrested for two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, trespass, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault with a dangerous weapon.
