Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012
1:11 a.m.: suspicious activity, Elm Street, a caller reports persons appear to be trying to steal a manhole cover, the responding officer reports he found that the persons in question had dropped a cell phone into a drain and removed the manhole cover briefly in a successful attempt to recover the cell phone;
1:53 a.m.: disturbance, Mechanic Street, a patrol officer reports he investigated smoke and the smell of burning plastic to find the hosts of a college aged party had a backyard fire, the tenants said that plastic had “unknowingly” been added to the fire which they extinguished;
2:11 p.m.: found property, Union Street at Union Avenue, a caller reports finding a registration plate, the responding officer reports the plate was transported to the station for safe keeping;
10:18 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, North Elm Street, a traffic bureau officer reports a traffic stop, the vehicle’s registration was found to be expired and it was towed to the police impound yard, the officer reports the female operator was provided a courtesy transport;
12:01 p.m.: larceny, East Main Street, a resident came to the station to report his dog was stolen from his car, the responding officer reports the man said that he parked at an East Main Street parking lot and left the car with a window partially open, the complainant said that when he returned to his vehicle he found that his 10-week-old husky mix puppy had been stolen;
1:11 p.m.: fire, Westfield State University, Western Avenue, a caller reports a fire under the hood of a vehicle behind the athletic center, the responding firefighters report the hood was forcibly opened and the fire was extinguished, the vehicle was towed from the scene;
3:29 p.m.: larceny, Springfield Road, a caller reports two juvenile shoplifters are in custody, the responding officer reports store staff said that he two children were seen secreting merchandise and were detained when they attempted to leave the store without making payment, the officer reports criminal complaints were filed against each child;
7:11 p.m.: fire, Washington Street, a resident came to the station to report that his neighbors have a large bonfire, the responding officer reports the he found that the fire was small, controlled and contained in a fire pit, the officer found no problems with the fire;

Monday, Oct. 22, 2012
2:11 a.m.: fire, Russellville Road, a caller reports a woodpile is on fire, the responding firefighters reports a stack of split wood was burning and was extinguished, the firefighters learned that there had been a fire there earlier in the day which apparently reignited;
10:49 a.m.: larceny, Belmont Street, a resident came to the station to report the theft of a jack, the responding officer reports the caller said that an engine jack last seen in his back yard on Sunday is now missing;
4:14 p.m.: vandalism, Southampton Road, caller reports windows at the rear of his business were broken over the weekend, the responding officer reports the caller said that he discovered telephone poles he has positioned in is yard to discourage truckers using his property as a turn-around have been moved and one was lodged against a broken window, the caller does not require a formal report but asks for extra patrols in the area;
5:55 p.m.: animal complaint, Leaview Drive, a caller reports a child was bitten by a fox, see story in the Wednesday edition of The Westfield News;
7:24 p.m.: vandalism, Hanover Street, a caller reports several youths smashed a neighbor’s pumpkin, the two responding officers report a search of the area id not yield any suspects;
8:50 p.m.: animal complaint, Paper Mil Road, a caller reports a mother bear and three cubs are feeding in her trash and she is concerned for people who may be walking dogs because the bear growled at her, the responding officer reports a man walking a German shepherd dog was advised to the leave the area immediately, the officer reports his cruiser’s lights and sirens startled the bears which fled over a fence into the Paper Mill Playground and thence into the woods, the caller was advised to keep her trash in her shed and bring in all bird feeders;
9:33 p.m.: breaking and entering, Colonial Pine Acres, a caller reports her son’s vehicle was entered and property was stolen, the responding officer reports the victim said that he parked his car in the parking lot at the complex and left a window partially open, the man said that he returned after about 40 minutes and found that the vehicle had been entered and a ring and vehicular paperwork had been stolen.
