NORTHAMPTON – Westfield Post 124 remains in the driver’s seat for a spot in the American Legion Baseball National Bound Tournament following its latest victory, a 4-2 win over host Northampton Tuesday night.
Matt Irzyk scattered seven hits, struck out three batters, and walked one a complete game performance on the mount for Westfield (10-2), one of the region’s top two teams (the top two teams advance to the nationals).
Kyle Murphy (2-for-4, run scored), Jake Toomey (hit, 2 runs), Nate Barnes (2-3, RBI), Jeff Hockenberry (1-3 led the Post 124 hit attack. Hockenberry scored the game-winner when Murphy laid down a bunt, and the ball was thrown away.
Westfield’s five-hit, sixth-inning output led to a 3-1 lead.
Ryan Tettemer made a key defensive player for Westfield in the third, throwing out a runner at the plate to protect a 1-0 lead.
Post 124 plays at Agawam Wednesday night, beginning at 5:45 p.m. They have games remaining Friday night against Wilbraham at Bullens Field at 7, and at Chicopee at Szot Park Saturday at 11 a.m.
