Rain wipes out Tuesday slate; action resumes Wednesday

WESTFIELD – The good news: nobody lost on the local baseball circuit. The bad news: they never played.
A smattering of games were postponed Tuesday in Westfield due to a splattering of rain drops on local ballfields.
The Westfield Starfires were scheduled to take on the Pittsfield Suns, but that game was postponed to be made up at a future date.
The expansion Starfires have had a rough start to their inaugural season, currently seated in last place in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League at 6-15. Entering Tuesday night, the North Shore Navigators and Pittsfield Suns were tied for first place at 12-8, followed by the Brockton Rox (12-10) and Nashua Silver Knights (11-10). The Bristol Blues and Worcester Bravehearts were tied in fifth place with records of 9-10.
Although the Starfires are still attempting to gain some traction in the league, they have posted some exciting come-from-behind walk-off victories that have kept the local sports scene abuzz.
The Starfires will return to action Wednesday against Nashua at Bullens Field at 6:30 p.m.
Westfield’s American Legion Baseball contest against Pittsfield at Jachym Field was also postponed Tuesday and will now be made up July 9. Post 124 (1-1-1) will resume their 2019 summer schedule Wednesday against Northampton at Jachym Field. First pitch is at 5:45 p.m.
The Westfield Little League Baseball 10-Year-Old All-Stars’ game against Agawam was also rained out Tuesday. The two teams will make up that contest Wednesday at Paper Mill Field at 6 p.m.
The 10-year-olds, who are off to a 2-0 start in postseason play, will seek their third straight win.
In other games Wednesday, the Westfield Little League Baseball Majors (2-0) will host Amherst at Ralph E. Sanville Memorial Field on Cross Street at 6 p.m., the Westfield Little League Baseball 11-Year-Old All-Stars will travel to Pettis Field in Huntington to take on Gateway at 5:45, and the Westfield Little League Softball 10U All-Star team will welcome Agawam at Sadie Knox Field at 6.
