Crosby lone victor; others excel
Mount Greylock 4, St. Mary 1

St. Mary’s played a strong, tough match Friday, pressuring Mount Greylock but falling short.
Jessica Crosby won the lone match for St. Mary. Crosby played an evenly matched first set against Mount Greylock’s Josie Dalsin, exchanging the lead early before winning the set 6-4. In her second set, Crosby’s baseline strokes and volleys at the net wore down Dalsin. She won the second set 6-0.
St. Mary’s Alexis Shedd delivered a heart-wrenching effort against Mount Greylock’s Mia Van Deurzen with some of the longest rallies.
“(Alexis) made Van Deurzen have to fight to get by her and win this match,” Saints’ coach Frank Crosby said. “It was never a sure thing for the Mount Greylock player.”
Van Deurzen won 6-4, 6-4.
St. Mary’s Erin Olearcek also lost a well-played match, falling to Mount Greylock’s Hannah Gilooly, 6-2, 6-3.
“The score wasn’t any indication of the match play,” coach Crosby said. “Olearcek is a young player, new to singles competition. …She was hitting the ball well and she adjusted to her opponent’s style of play as the match progressed. She just continues to improve and I think she is going to be very competitive as she continues to play.”
In doubles play, Mount Greylock’s Emma Stankiewicz topped St. Mary’s Maura O’Neal and Deirde Smith, 6-3, 6-1. Saints’ Abigail Shanahan and Mary Turbolski fell 6-2, 6-3 to Olivia Winters and Izzy Leonard.
“Both doubles’ teams played hard,” coach Crosby said. “It’s early in the season and I expect the team’s play will improve as we move through the season.”
