NORTH ADAMS – The visiting Westfield State men’s basketball team tied a school record with 13 three-point baskets as they defeated the MCLA Trailblazers 84-63 Saturday afternoon in MASCAC action. With the win, the Owls are now 5-8 overall and improve to 2-0 in the MASCAC. MCLA falls to 2-10 on the season and 0-2 in the league.
Jesus Sanchez led four players in double figures with 21 points including three triples. Jose Allen added 19 points on 5-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Allister Williams netted 15 points while Austin Joseph added 10 points.
The Owls began the game on fire connecting on their first four possessions with three pointers to jump out to an early 12-4 lead. Westfield would continue the barrage from deep as their first eight field goals were all from beyond the arc. Following the torrid start, the Owls led 22-4 before MCLA could get any footing. Allister Williams and Jose Allen each hit three triples during the opening run.
The Owls would cruise into halftime leading 49-33 even though MCLA shot 50% from the floor. The Owls were just as efficient in the opening half shooting 51% including a 9-13 effort from three point range.
The Trailblazers never threatened in the second half as the Owls led comfortably for the remainder of action.
MCLA was led by Joe Wiggins’ game high 23 points on 8-15 shooting. Joe Murray added 11 points and 10 boards for the Trailblazers. MCLA did commit 22 turnovers in the loss.
Sanchez added 5 boards and 4 assists for the Owls in the win. Evan Hopson collected 9 points and a team best 7 rebounds for Westfield. The Owls tied the school record for 3-Point FGM set back in 2008 against Paul Smith College. — story courtesy MCLA sports info
