Saints shut out Rams, 18-0

St. Mary’s Bryce Roberts (11) scores early in the first quarter against Granby Wednesday at Boardman Field. (MARC ST.ONGE/THE WESTFIELD NEWS)

WESTFIELD – The St. Mary’s High School boys lacrosse team scored not one, not two, not three, four, five, six, seven, eight or even nine, but 10 goals in a nearly flawless opening quarter against Granby Wednesday at Boardman Field. The Saints went on to defeat the Rams 18-0.
St. Mary’s dominated from start to finish and held Granby without a goal for all 48 minutes.
Bryce Roberts got St. Mary’s started with a wraparound goal, coming from around the back side of the net, taking a pass from Evan Ploof and finishing the bang-bang play with a quick strike into the back of the net.
Roberts set up his teammate, Fred Murray, for the next scoring play. Murray took the ball and split the middle of the defense with a short run before firing an overhand shot into the net.
Roberts scored on a backhanded goal to make it 3-0.
Kegan Foley (2 goals) made a bunny hop and then shot it from in tight, scoring to make it a 4-0 advantage. Six more scores in the quarter made it 10-0.
“We were just moving the ball well … and running harder,” said Roberts, who went on to finish with eight goals and four assists. “When we are losing,” he said, “we’re letting the other team control the pace of the game. When we’re winning, we’re controlling the pace.”
After a furious start, St. Mary’s continued to control the ball and outwork the competition. Granby put forth a renewed defensive effort early in the second quarter, holding the Saints scoreless until midway through the second quarter when Murray scored. Less than three minutes later, Seamus Smith (3 goals) scored off a rebound. Roberts made it 13-0.
Roberts was not done, scoring two of the team’s three third quarter goals, including a nice sidearm effort as he was falling down. The Saints scored twice more in the fourth quarter.
Chad Hockenberry, Evan Carmody, and Matt Thayer each scored once. Jungmin Lee finished with two assists. Connor Mott and Anthony Pighetti each had one.
St. Mary’s goalie Colin Ramos made 14 saves to earn a shutout. He also had an assist.

WRESTLING
Bombers stun Purple Knights
Westfield 36, Holyoke 34
Westfield avenged last year’s 60-21 loss to Holyoke with a thrilling victory Wednesday. Bombers senior Zac Cernak led the way at 138 pounds, pinning Holyoke’s Manny Rivera in 17 seconds.
“Zac has been wrestling incredibly this year,” Westfield wrestling coach Chris Malinowski said.
Westfield sophomore Anthony Ross (132 pounds) disposed of Holyoke’s Manuel Fernandez in 40 seconds, drawing praise from his head coach. “It was the best match of his young and promising career,” coach Malinowski said.
In the most exciting match of the night, Westfield sophomore Tristan Connors took Holyoke’s senior captain Moses Oquinedo the distance before losing 12-4. “Moses may be the best in the state at his weight class,” Malinowski said.
Ruslan Tablovich, Nikita Tablovich, Caitlin Carter and Nico Paulson also brought home victories.
