Second half surge powers Lancers

EAST LONGMEADOW – Westfield’s run in the MIAA Boys Lacrosse Central/West Division 2 Tournament came to an end Friday night in the finals at the hands of Longmeadow, which scored six unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 16-6 victory and its third consecutive sectional championship.
The sixth-ranked Bombers (14-8) had pulled to within 7-5 with back-to-back goals to open the second half, but the top-ranked Lancers (20-3) and their offensive depth proved too much for Westfield, which was outscored 9-1 to close out the game.

“They’ve got so many guys that can beat you offensively,” Westfield Head Coach Mark Cavallon said. “A few times we got beat kind of ball-watching, and they did some backdoor cuts on us and were able to get some one-on-ones with our goalie. They went on that run there, and we just couldn’t stop it. We couldn’t stop the bleeding, and that ended up being the difference. They’re a great team, and hats off to them.”
Longmeadow was led by junior Spencer Robbins (7 points) and senior Kristopher Campbell (6 points), while senior goalie Josh Zak had 10 saves. Noah Skole and Jack Barron also had four points apiece for the Lancers, while Clay Moseman (3 points), Sam Byrne (2 points) and Matt Gay (1 point) rounded out the scoring for Longmeadow.
Westfield’s scoring attack was led by Max Maggipinto and William Gentle, who each had three points, while teammates Landon Reyes and Kohl Lunardini had two points apiece. Nick Clauson also contributed with a point for Westfield.
Overall, Cavallon said he was proud of his team for meshing together down the stretch and overcoming early season injuries.
“It was a pleasure to coach them,” Cavallon said. “They worked hard every day in practice, and I think that showed at the end of the season. Disappointing loss today, but overall I couldn’t be more proud of these guys.”
