WESTFIELD – The sunshine was not the only thing shining brightly on Friday.
The Westfield High School girls tennis team saved the best for last, adding to the already sunshiny day with a sparkling performance against East Longmeadow.
Westfield soared past East Longmeadow 4-1 on “Senior Day” Friday to improve to 8-8 overall and secure a postseason berth.
Westfield’s Clara Hinck defeated Jordan Miller at first singles 6-3, 6-2; Brianna Shvetsov downed Anna Hugney at second singles, 6-1, 6-0; and, senior Gwen Smith upended Mackenzie Richards 6-0-1.
Bombers’ seniors Maddy Leblanc and Sara Grobe toppled Yaqeen Azzawi and Anna Moynier at second doubles, 7-5, 6-4.

Westfield 15, Amherst 5
Bombers seize title
WESTFIELD – Hannah Jarvis scored five goals and two assists, Kylie Buchanan had a hat trick, and Jordan Kowalski scored once and assisted twice as Westfield routed visiting Amherst 15-5 on “Senior Day”.
Every senior scored for Westfield, which improved to 10-7 and captured the Valley League title.
“We look forward to playoffs,” Westfield coach Paul Fenwick said.
SOFTBALL
Gators shred opposition
Gateway 17, Renaissance 0 (5 inn.)
League winners Gateway continued its season-long surge, breezing past Renaissance at home.
Angela Wright (2 runs, 3 RBIs) and Ava Auclair (triple, run, 3 RBIs) led Gateway with three hits apiece. Gators’ Allison Manos (run, 2 RBIs) and Grace Van Buren (2 runs) each finished with two hits. Makala Gogal scored three runs.
Gateway pitcher Audrey Gamble allowed just two hits, struck out four batters and walked none in the mercy-shortened victory.
BASEBALL
Bombers nip Lancers
Westfield 2, Longmeadow 1
Jimmy Hagan tossed a three-hitter, striking out seven batters and walking none – he allowed one unearned run – in a complete game victory. Hagan also had a hit and an RBI, Jack Blake went 2-for-3, and Scott Bussell and Baley Collier each scored a run.

SOFTBALL
Southwick 9, Central 5
It was a monumental achievement for Southwick, which posted a win over Division 1 foe, central, and also produced a 100th career hit for Tori Dellaguistina who achieved the feat with a three-run home run.
Southwick pitcher Nikki Willey was excellent again in the circle, striking out 10 batters and only allowing three earned runs.
“The team has been really working on its defense as of late and finding different ways to score runs at the plate,” Southwick softball coach Joe Hough said. “We want to be a balanced team that can play a variety of ways, and the team unselfishly does this every game.”
Southwick has two games remaining before heading into the playoffs again.
