WESTFIELD – One step back, two steps forward.
The Westfield Starfires reversed course, ridding themselves of a bad taste left in their mouths from a 16-8 loss to the Worcester Bravehearts Wednesday, by dealing the Brockton Rox two losses a day later.
Westfield swept a day-night double header against Brockton, defeating the Rox 1-0 and 8-7 Thursday at Bullens Field.
In the first game, Jeff Taylor (Millersville University) pitched a complete game shutout and West Springfield native Andre Marrero (Quinnipiac University) homered to lead Westfield past Brockton 1-0 in the seven-inning contest.
Taylor tossed a two-hitter, recording 10 Ks in the outing. He allowed just one walk.
Marrero homered again in the nightcap as did fellow teammate Michael DeMartino (Southern Connecticut State University). Marrero went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. In addition to blasting a go-ahead, three-run homer, Marrero also delivered the walk-off hit. DeMartino had a run and two RBIs.
Drew DeMartino (University of Hartford), of Pittsfield went 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI, and two runs scored. Ramon Jimenez (Boston College), of Chicopee and Danny Crossen (Southern Connecticut State University) each also had two hits and drove in a run.
A busy road lies ahead for the Whip City’s Futures Collegiate Baseball League representatives.
Westfield travels to Leominster Aug. 7 to take on the Worcester Bravehearts and plays at the North Shore Navigators Aug. 8 before returning to Leominster to take on the Bravehearts again Aug. 9. The Starfires return home to host the Bravehearts Aug. 11 at Bullens Field. First pitch is 3 p.m.
