Tigers net MVP honors, trip to No. 1 Ware

WESTFIELD – In one of the closest votes since our Westfield News High School MVP of the Week poll’s inception last fall, Westfield Technical Academy High School boys basketball players Brody Zabielski and David Tikhonchuk slipped past Southwick hoops’ Devin Parrow by the narrowest of voting margins, garnering 53 percent of all the votes cast on our company Facebook Page.
Tikhonchuk and Zabielski scored 15 points apiece to lead the tournament-bound Tigers to a recent 53-48 win over Pathfinder, spoiling the Pioneers “Senior Night” festivities.
Westfield Technical Academy drew the last seed, No. 16 overall, in the West Division 4 boys basketball tournament. The Tigers (7-11) will open up the postseason at top-seeded Ware (18-2) Monday night at 7.
Parrow will lead the No. 12 Southwick Rams (10-10) into No. 5 Wahconah (15-5) for a D3 tournament opener Monday. Tip-off is also at 7 p.m.
In girls basketball postseason action, No. 17 St. Mary (11-9) travels to No. 16 Pathfinder (10-10) for a Monday night preliminary round game at 7.
On Tuesday, the 13th seeded Gateway girls basketball team (14-6) travels to No. 4 Mount Everett (13-7) for a D4 tournament opener. Game time is also 7 p.m.
Hockey tournament action begins Thursday with No. 3 Westfield (11-7-2) squaring off against No. 2 Minnechaug (11-6-3) in a Division 3 semifinal at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield. The puck drops at 8 p.m.
