Twiss Street Transfer Station reopening July 1

WESTFIELD – The Twiss Street Transfer Station is re-opening July 1.

Originally shut down due to COVID-19, the city took the opportunity to do some work at the Station.

“This closure is as a result of construction currently being conducted at the Transfer Station as well as financial difficulties facing the city,” stated a press release.

Residents who purchased a Transfer Station entrance sticker for fiscal year 2020 will be allowed to continue using that sticker through Sept. 30, 2020. Those wishing to use the Transfer Station after July 1, and who do not currently have an entrance sticker, will be allowed to purchase a temporary sticker for the cost of $10 which will be good from July 1 through Sept. 30, 2020.

To obtain a temporary entrance sticker, residents should mail or drop off a check or money order made payable to “City of Westfield” in the amount of $10, along with proof of residency to: License Department Westfield City Hall 59 Court Street Westfield, MA 01085.

“Because City Hall remains closed to the public, the only way residents can obtain the temporary entrance pass is by check or money order,” said Health Department Office Manager Cheryl McMordie. “Payment can be either mailed to the License Department or placed in the drop box which is located on the side of the City Hall building by the ramp door. Proof of residency will be required– if their check has a Westfield address, that will be sufficient.”

Beginning in mid-September, fiscal year 2021 entrance stickers will be available at the reduced rate of $20 and will be effective from Oct. 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021. Effective immediately you will now be required to provide proof of residency at the gate prior to admittance.

The Transfer Station will be open from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on July 1,2 and 3 and closed on Saturday, July 4 for the holiday.  On Monday, July 6, the Station will resume its previous schedule of Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

“We will be accepting all items that were previously allowed, including bulk items,” said McMordie. “The individual item stickers can be purchased at the courtesy desk at either of the two Westfield Big Y’s.”

Entrance stickers cannot be purchased at Big Y.

“As I’m sure there will be a lot of residents wanting to use the Transfer Station on July 1, protocols/procedures will need to be implemented,” McMordie said. “I will be meeting with our director to discuss the best way to proceed with this.”
