Wellesley gets past WSU late

WATERVILLE, MAINE – Wellesley College received 11 points and 16 rebounds from Morgyne Weaver to hold on for a 56-47 victory over Westfield State University on the first day of the Colby College Women’s Basketball Classic on Saturday.
In games that were predetermined, Wellesley will face Colby at 3 p.m. Sunday in what amounts to the title game. Colby beat MIT in the other game Saturday. Westfield State and MIT meet at 1 p.m.
Westfield State battled hard to tie the game at 42-42 with 7:28 left in the second half. Wellesley’s Kendall Bianchi hit her only field goal of the game, but it was a big 3-point shot to give the Blue the lead for good at 45-42 with 5:18 to go. The trey helped Wellesley end the game with a 14-5 run.
Ailis Hanley shot 5-for-6 from the field for 12 points and blocked two shots for the Blue. Natalie Anderson added 10 points, while Kayla Jang scored nine and had four assists for Wellesley.
Keri Doldoorian was the lone Owl in double figures with 13 points, including three 3-point shots. Forbasaw Nkamebo had early foul trouble, but finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Jen Ashton led all players with eight assists, while Rebecca Sapouckey had three blocked shots and six points.
