WESTFIELD – Westfield State University erupted for four third-period goals, including three in the final eight minutes to erase a 3-1 deficit and rally the Owls to a 4-3 victory over Worcester State University in MASCAC men’s ice hockey action Saturday evening, Jan. 12.
The Owls evened their conference record at 4-4 and improved to 8-6 overall. Worcester is 1-7 and 4-10.
Worcester jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period on goals by Nathan Stanley and Joe White.
After a scoreless second period, the Owls finally lit the lamp 5:59 into the third stanza on TJ Powers’ team-leading sixth goal of the season.
It looked bleak for the Owls when Worcester got back its two-goal lead 58 seconds later on a short handed tally from Stanley. But Westfield proved the old adage the game isn’t over until it’s over when it struck for three goals in a four-minute span.
Steve Evans scored with 7:49 remaining in the game and captain Vince Perreault tied the score 28 seconds later. P.J. McCadden concluded the scoring onslaught with a power play goal with 3:54 remaining.
Worcester outshot Westfield, 30-27, with Owl goal Ian Perrier recording 27 saves.
