Westfield State commencement postponed to October

WESTFIELD- Westfield State University announced April 30 that the commencement ceremony for the graduating Class of 2020 is being rescheduled to Oct. 24 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement comes more than a month after students at WSU left campus as the pandemic initially grew in severity across the country. Students have been learning remotely in the meantime.

“We are excited to announce that this year’s Commencement ceremony has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, at MassMutual in Springfield, for undergraduate and graduate students,” said the WSU twitter Thursday morning, “We can’t wait to celebrate the accomplishments of the Westfield State Class of 2020!”

The Oct. 24 graduation ceremony will feature both graduates and undergraduates receiving their diplomas. WSU typically has two separate ceremonies for both groups of students. Graduates were originally to be recognized on May 14, and undergraduates on May 16.

A spokesperson for WSU said that they are still discussing details such as social distancing to prevent the spread of the virus during the ceremony should it still be a concern in October.
