WESTFIELD – Senior Ryan Nickerson scored in the seventh minute as Westfield State University held on for a 1-0 men’s soccer victory over Albertus Magnus College in the Owls’ home opener before a large crowd of more than 500 spectators on Wednesday evening, Sept. 4.
Nickerson headed in the game-winning goal after receiving a corner kick from senior Dan Brady.
Westfield, which outshot Albertus Magnus, 17-12, nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 81st minute when sophomore Zack Horn’s blast from 25 yards rang off the left post.
Albertus’ biggest scoring threat came in the game’s final 10 seconds when a shot by Lindsley Barrett hit the crossbar then was batted away by Owl goalie Keith Hevey.
