Westfield Youth Football Roundup – Week 1

SENIOR LEAGUE
Westfield 44, Longmeadow 0
The Westfield Senior Bomber Football team opened their season with a dominating win over host Longmeadow. Westfield’s defense was fast and physical from the first snap of the game.
Adam Kearing ( LB ) had 3 tackles, Austin St. Pierre ( DT ) had 3 tackles and 1 sack. Mark Blahut and ( DT) and Dan Holland ( DT ) each had 3 tackles. Corners Ari Schwartz and Wilton Royal shut down Longmeadow’s outside run game. Westfield’s defense only allowed Longmeadow to covert 1 first down and held them to negative yardage for the game.
Offensively Westfield scored by land and air. Michael Butler had 102 yards on three carries and scored twice from 35 yards and 65 yards. Nate Boulay finished with 70 yards on 6 carries. Ryan Porter ran for 53 yards on four carries. It was Quarterback by committee. Starting QB Tyler Delgado scored once rushing from 3 yards out and connecting with Mason Balch on a 20 yard swing pass for another TD. Scott Walsh took over in the second half. Walsh threw a 30 yard strike to Kenny Flores in the back of the end zone with Flores making a great catch and getting one foot in bounds for the touch down. Then in the 4th quarter Walsh hit Joey Ditzner on an out route for a 23 yard touch down. Westfield Offensive line gave QB’s time to throw and opened huge holes for the RB’s. Jake Harden, Chris Ward, Ant Clark, Ant St. Pierre and Dan Holland made up the starting O-Line.
With 2 minutes left in the game, Westfield’s Safety Camden Garfield intercepted a pass and ran it back 50 yards to the three yard line, where Westfield kneel the ball to run the clock out.
Westfield will travel to Springfield to play Springfield 5A ( 1-0 ) this Sunday.

JUNIOR LEAGUE
Longmeadow 16, Westfield 12
The Westfield Junior Bomber Football team opened their season with a game against host Longmeadow. Longmeadow received the opening kickoff and moved their opening drive down field for a touchdown and 2 point conversion. After the returned kickoff, Westfield began their offense by responding with a 17 yard run from Trot Gosselin, a 10 yard run from Nicholas Barber and capped it off with a 22 yard run from Bailey Collier for their first touchdown of season. On the following kickoff, the great tackle of Trot Gosselin of the kicking team caused Longmeadow to turn the ball over and it was recovered by Ryan Rix of Westfield. On the first play after the turnover, Mike Nihill took the handoff 44 yards for a touchdown. Ending the 1st half with the Westfield Bombers ahead with the score 12 to 8. In the 4th quarter, Longmeadow responded with their 2nd touchdown with less than 2 minutes left in the game. Westfield took the kickoff back to the 45 yard line. In an attempt to work against time, the Westfield Bombers were able to move the ball another 25 yards, but unfortunately fell short on their attempt to retake the lead.
Offensively, Bailey Collier (RB) led the team with a combined 65 yards on 8 carries and 1 reception and scored on a 22 yard run. Nicholas Barber (QB) rushed for 46 yards on 4 carries and passed for 1 completion of 8 yards. Mike Nihill (RB) ran for 44 yards on 4 carries and had 1 reception and scored on a 42 yard run. And last but not lease Trot Gosselin (FB) ended with 33 rushing yards on 3 carries.
Westfield’s defense was physical throughout the game. Their squad was led by Blake Tyler (LB) with 5 tackles and a sack, Kris Meneses had 2 tackles and a sack, Trot Gosselin (LB) and Ian Wilhoite (CB) each had 3 tackles and Manny Sardinha (CB), Aiden Boyle (LB), Nick Clauson (LB) each had 2 tackles. The front three of Joey Raco (DT), Johann Schieppe (NT) and Nick Pellegrini (DT) prevented much of the Longmeadow rushing attach in the middle of the field.

PEEWEE FOOTBALL
Westfield 14, Longmeadow 14
Westfield Peewee football is off to a good start. The 3rd and 4th graders tied the Longmeadow Lancers Saturday evening in a hard fought game. Longmeadow scored first and completed a two point conversion. Westfield’s defense tightened up and held Longmeadow scoreless for the next two quarters. Westfield’s running backs Mc Cormick, Melchionne, Strange, Florek, and Shabowski. began moving the ball during the second quarter. Outstanding blocking came from our offensive line, Barber, Starkey, Doulette, West, Tirrell and others. Westfield was able to scored just before half time tying up the game. Westfield scored again late in the third quarter jumping ahead 14-8 but was unable to score complete a two point conversion attempt. With two minutes left in the game Longmeadow came back with a touchdown tying the game with 14-14. A heroic defensive stand stopped Longmeadow’s two-point attempt. Last chance, Westfield offense driving down the field to Longmeadow 20-yard line. With five seconds on the clock, Quarterback Tower was able to complete a pass half back Melchionne , but time expired. All players played hard and with good sportsmanship.
