Whipping up a winner

WESTFIELD – The Longmeadow High School girls’ ice hockey team, backed by a strong contingent of Westfield players, knocked off Auburn 4-2 Friday night at Amelia Park Ice Arena.
Madison Pelletier (Westfield) scored one goal (2nd period) and assisted on three others to lead Longmeadow. Katie Joyal (Westfield) finished with two goals, one of which came in the second period and an open-netter late in regulation.
Mackenzie Pelletier (Westfield) also notched a goal for Longmeadow (3-3-1) in the first period.
Lancers’ goalie Kayla Brown made 22 saves, allowing just two scores – one each from Katie Mason and Hunter Bailey. Julia Crowley assisted on both Auburn goals.

Golden Eagles nip Bombers
Central 60, Westfield 59

Central dominated the boards in the waning seconds, and dodged a buzzer-beater from Westfield to secure a victory.
Jorge Torres (18 points), Josh Pressley (15), and Giovanni Kraos (10) each reached double-digits scoring for Central.
Westfield’s John O’Brien scored a game-high 24, and Gabe Piepergerdes finished with 19.
“It was a really good, hard-fought game,” Westfield coach Josh Balestracci said. “We just go unlucky in this one.”

Eagles soar
Easthampton 74, Southwick 42

Easthampton went on a 15-6 second-quarter run, and outscored Southwick 42-20 over the second half to pull away.
“They kind of blitzed us in the second half,” Southwick coach Dylan Dubuc said of the Eagles ability to succeed in transition.
Bailey Emerson led Southwick with 13 points, while Rams’ Ryan LeClair and Nick Hough scored nine and eight, respectively.

Butler, Collins pace Saints
McCann Tech 63, St. Mary 17

Jake Butler scored a team-high nine points for St. Mary. Saints’ Drew Collins had eight.
“It was a very tough night for us shooting obviously,” St. Mary coach Joe Molta said. “They obviously shot the ball really well.”
The Saints will get another shot at victory Monday when they travel to Pathfinder to take on the Pioneers at 7 p.m.
