WHS field hockey tops Amherst, 2-1

WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School field hockey team pulled off a close victory Thursday.
Westfield received a goal in each half – one from Gabbi Lunardini (1st) and one from Ashlee Owen (2nd) – to take a 2-0 lead against Amherst. The Bombers won 2-1.
Amherst tallied a goal with about 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Westfield goalie Karly Mastello (1st half) made two saves; teammate Jenna Rothermel played the final 17-plus minutes.
Amherst goalkeeper Nadia Suuieriero had a fantastic game in net, recording 24 saves.
Westfield returns to action Friday against visiting Southwick at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Bombers (2-1) continued their great start with a second straight home victory.
Westfield freshman captain Olivia Chaoush netted the first goal of the game at 8:55 on a pass from freshman Jordan Bower, who received a quick pass from sophomore captain Grace Silva. Sophomore Julia Rowbotham started the scoring play with a strong cross pass.
Less than a minute later, freshman Liz Poteat scored an unassisted goal at 8:04. Freshman goalkeeper Alexis Corcoran was credited with the shutout.
