WESTFIELD – The “Fall II” season is quickly taking shape.
On Friday, schedules for the Westfield High School football team and Southwick Regional and Gateway Regional boys and girls high school basketball teams were officially released to the public.
Westfield football kicks off Fri., March 19 @ Chicopee Comprehensive High School at 4:30 p.m. The Bombers, who open the season with four straight road games, play at Central (March 26) at Minnechaug (April 2), and at Holyoke (April 9). They return home for their final two contests against Agawam (April 16) and East Longmeadow (April 23).
“I’m on my third round of excitement,” Westfield High School athletic coordinator Ryan Dunphy said. “Fall was awesome, it was great to see winter start and complete, and I’m hoping for the same for this ‘Fall II’ season.”
Gateway will get things started on March 9 when it “tips off” – – there are no actual tip-offs this season due to COVID-related rules and regulations adopted by the MIAA and PVIAC – – the 2021 season against St. Mary’s. The Gators boys hoops team hosts the Saints, while the Gators girls squad will travel to Westfield to take on the Saints at Westfield Intermediate School.
On March 15, Southwick will open the “Fall II” season against Gateway. The Rams boys will host the Gators. The Rams girls will travel to Huntington to square off against the Gators.
Southwick got off to a delayed start this past winter due to coronavirus protocols, and Gateway was sidelined the entire winter sports season.
“The kids are happy; I’m happy they’re playing again,” Gateway Athletic Director Matt Bonenfant said. “It’s been a long road. The kids are chomping at the bit to go.”
Notes: Westfield High will also participate in an indoor track season held outdoors during the month of April. Three meets will be announced in the coming weeks. …A schedule is also forthcoming for Southwick girls volleyball.
