WHS girls’ track outshines Holyoke

HOLYOKE – Kiany Roman (100 meters, 13.3; 200 meters, 28.3) and Alex Lehman (400 meters, 64.3; triple jump, 31-6) won two events apiece to help lead the Westfield High School girls’ track and field team to a 98-38 win over host Holyoke on Wednesday.
The Bombers (4-0), who won 11 of 16 first-place finishes, took 10 of 14 possible second-place spots and 13 of 14 thirds.
“It was remarkable,” Westfield coach Linda Rowbotham said. “That’s depth!”
Westfield’s Jenna Rothermel came close to winning a pair of events as well, capturing first place in the discus (89-7), and finishing second in the shot put (27-1) – a personal best and just one inch shy of the winner.
Emily Andrews (100 hurdles, 18.03), Caleigh Rockwal (2 mile, 13:17.0), Keri Paton (javelin, 96-3), and Jaymie White (high jump, 4-10) each won individual events for Westfield. The Bombers’ 4×400 relay team (Emelia Lund, Kaleigh Florek, Ellie Dufraine, Kayla Roskey) remained undefeated with a first-place time of 4:52.5; the team’s 4×100 relay team (Rothermel, Nicole Chartier, Emily Andrews, Chrissy Seymour) also won with a Western Massachusetts qualifying time of 54.9.
Westfield swept the 100-meter dash (Rothermel, 2nd; Karly Diltz, 3rd), 400-meter dash (Roskey, 2nd; Dufraine, 3rd), 2-mile (Elizabeth Marcyoniak, 2nd; Carly Censabella, 3rd), discus (Lauren Kidrick, 2nd; Paton, 3rd), high jump (Ashley Day, 2nd; Andrews, 3rd), and triple jump (Day, 2nd; White, 3rd).
“The nice thing about this team,” Rowbotham said, “is that every girl realizes how important a role they play for the team. They see it’s working to create our overall wins. We have good underclassmen with strong senior leadership. We’re very well balanced.”
