WHS passes road test

ATHOL – Three up, three down.
The Westfield High School boys’ volleyball team passed its third test of the season, downing Athol on the road Wednesday night in three straight sets.
The Bombers, who completed a rally late in the middle frame, won 25-20, 25-22, 25-11.
Athol gave us a good test with how strong they are defensively,” Westfield coach Tyler Wingate said. “We made some big plays at the end of the second set to complete the late set comeback.”
Solid defense from Ryan Bucko (4 blocks), Isaiah Headley (3 blocks), and Nick Hall (2 blocks) helped spur the three-set victory.
“Our blocking was solid throughout the day,” Wingate said.
Westfield’s offense, on display early this season, was also true to form against Athol. Bucko and Manny Golob (1 block) led the Bombers with nine kills apiece, Ben Sokolov came off the bench to deliver five kills, and Eric Shilyuk contributed 27 assists.
Westfield’s next game will be a rematch of quarterfinal opponents when the Bombers host the Belchertown Orioles Thursday at 5:15 p.m.
