WHS Science Fair finalists advance to states; two tapped for international competition

WESTFIELD – Lauren Figy, science, technology and engineering supervisor for Westfield Public Schools announced that all 20 of the Westfield High School students that were selected to attend the Region I Science Fair at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams on March 8 will be moving on to compete in the state fair May 3-4 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The 20 finalists that went to the regional competition were selected by 90 community judges from out of 241 entries from Westfield High School and Westfield Technical Academy at the Science Fair on Feb. 7 at Westfield High School.
In addition, the two first place regional award winners, Abigail Goyette, who won for her project, “Concentration of Red Dye 40 in Sports Drinks” and Suvin Sundararajan, with “Analysis of the Manufacturing Process of D-Glucose-based Thermoformed Polymers,” were tapped for the international competition in Phoenix, Arizona in June.
Figy said 12 students were selected at regional’s statewide for 8 slots in the international competition. “Of the two one will move on for sure, but there is a possibility both will move on,” Figy said.
