WNEU retains President’s Cup

SPRINGFIELD – Cam Gallagher scored on a 40-yard touchdown catch, but that was one of few highlights for Westfield State University, as the Owls fell to Western New England University by a 55-7 final score in the annual President’s Cup game at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday.
Western New England retained the cup for the third straight year with the win. The Golden Bears led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, and 28-0 at the half.
Westfield State quarterback Shawn Brathwaite found Gallagher for the score late in the third quarter to cut the Bears lead to 42-7.
Western New England rolled up 529 yards of total offense, led by QB Anthony Service who threw for 214 yards and rushed for 63 more.
Freshman running back Rufus Rushins ran for 59 yards on 10 carries for Westfield State. Brathwaite finished 13-30 for 141 yards passing, with Gallagher totaling 57 yards on five catches.
Defensively, safety William Tejada finished with 12 tackles and an interception for Westfield.
Westfield falls to 1-1 on the season with the loss, while the Golden Bears improve to 2-0. The Owls will be back in action next Saturday, playing at MASCAC foe UMass Dartmouth. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
