WESTFIELD – Senior Holly Brouillette (Burlington, Mass.) scored two goals as Westfield State University won, 4-1 in a Little East Conference match over Salem State University in field hockey at Alumni Field Saturday evening.
Just 6:59 into the first half, Salem State’s junior Jennifer Jordan (Saugus, Mass. /Bishop Fenwick) scored off a corner play with an assist by teammate Natalie Bourne (Tewksbury, Mass. /Tewksbury Memorial) to make it an early 1-0 Vikings lead.
Brouillette was able to make it a tie game in the 35th minute after flipping in the rebound of a saved shot from Owls’ junior Rachel Testa (Westminster, Mass. /Oakmont). The game was tied 1-1 at the half.
Westfield’s Alanah Melanson (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored the Owls’ second goal to start the second half at 38:00 after a goal line cross pass from Brouillette making it a 2-1 lead for the Owls.
Westfield landed two late goals in net towards the end of the second half, both unassisted, from sophomore Carly Zona (Auburn, Mass.) at 62:06 and a second goal from Brouillette at 64:58 making the final score 4-1 over the Salem State Vikings.
Westfield State held a 32-4 advantage in shots and a 26-3 advantage in shots on goal. Salem State’s Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.) played 64:58 minutes in net, making 22 saves for the Vikings. Teammate Victoria Kako (Salem, Mass.) played the final 5:02 minutes in net, making no saves and allowing zero goals in net.
Westfield State senior goalkeeper Megan Fountaine (Scituate, Mass.) made two saves for the Owls.
Westfield improves to 9-4 on the season and 5-3 in the conference, while Salem is now 1-9 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
The Owls will travel to Eastern Connecticut State for a 4:00 p.m. game on October 11.
Salem State will host Southern Maine October 11 at 7:00 pm.
