MARLBOROUGH – Westfield State University defeated Becker College, 8-1, in non-conference men’s ice hockey action Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the New England Sports Center.
The win ups the Owls record to 5-7, while the Ice Hawks fall to 1-9-2.
Westfield got on the board nine minutes into the game when Taylor Murphy (Toronto, Ont.) fed Dalton Jay (Hamilton, Ont.) from behind the Hawks net for his sixth goal of the season.
The Owls added to their lead with 7:09 remaining in the first period when TJ Powers (East Greenwich, R.I.) broke through the Becker defense, beating Greg Hussey (Medford, Mass.) glove side.
The Owls increased their lead to 3-0 with 5:31 remaining in the second period when freshman Jake Suvak (Parma Heights, Ohio) beat Hussey with a wrist shot from just outside the faceoff circle.
Westfield padded their lead just 1:18 later when Tyler Prendergast (Richmond Hill, Ont.) blasted a shot through a screen, making the score 4-0. The Owls added a short-handed goal from Taylor Murphy with 2:21 remaining in the second period to give them a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Ice Hawks finally got on the board 1:09 into the third period when Justin Erhart (St. Paul, Minn.) backhanded a pass from Connor Merrick (Manchester, N.H.) past the dive of Westfield State goalie Eddie Davey (Orangeville, Ont.).
Westfield State made the score 6-1 when Jackson Leef (Fort Wayne, Ind.) rebounded a Justin DeVincentis (Ancaster, Ont.) shot, lifting it past the outstretched glove of backup goalie Shaun Millerick.
The Owls finished off the Ice Hawks with late goals from TJ Powers and Maxime Richard, making the final 8-1.
Westfield goalie Eddie Davey turned away 25 shots to improve his record to 5-2 on the season. Greg Hussey and Shaun Millerick (Hampton, N.H) combined to make 41 stops in a losing effort.
Both teams return to ice on Saturday, January 11 with Westfield hosting Framingham State at 5:35 p.m. in a key MASCAC game, while Becker hosts Trinity College at 5:50 p.m.
