WSU softball wins season opener

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Westfield State University softball team opened its 2013 season with a 4-3 victory over Ripon (Wis.) College on Monday, March 11. Later in the day the Owls lost to St. Lawrence (N.Y.) University, 4-1.
Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Westfield scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Courtney Begin, Amanda Flower and Breanne Bisceglia all singled to load the bases. Begin scored on a wild pitch and Flower crossed the plate on a catcher throwing error. Molly Dunbar plated Bisceglia with an RBI single up the middle.
Ripon tied the score with two runs in the fifth then Westfield scored the decisive run in the fifth. Dunbar walked and advanced to second on Kelsey Carpenter’s groundout to the catcher. Kat Robinson then delivered the game-winning hit, an RBI single down the right field line.
Westfield outhit Ripon, 9-7. Begin was 2 for 4 and Bisceglia was 2 for 3.
Winning pitcher Emily Mailloux allowed one earned run and three walks. The sophomore hurler struck out three.
In the 4-1 setback to St. Lawrence, Westfield took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bisceglia drew a two-out walk, advanced to third on Dunbar’s single and scored on a fielding error.
St. Lawrence tied the score in the bottom of the first, scored the decisive run the third and tacked on two insurance tallies in the sixth.
Westfield was outhit 7-4. First baseman Celina Sinico was 2 for 3 for the Owls.
Kelley Fluet was the losing pitcher; she walked two and struck out one.
WESTFIELD LAX EDGES ROCHESTER: Senor Maura Stack scored four goals to lead Westfield State University to an 8-6 women’s lacrosse victory over the University of Rochester (N.Y.) on Tuesday afternoon, March 12.
“It was a good back-and-forth game,” said Westfield coach Greg Styles.

Westfield State evened its record at 1-1. The Owls will play Colby-Sawyer College at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Fla., on Thursday, March 14.
