WSU stuns Stonehill in OT, 6-5

WESTFIELD– Junior captain Vince Perreault registered a hat trick, scoring three third-period goals to rally Westfield State University to a 6-5 overtime victory over Stonehill College in a wild non-conference ice hockey game on Saturday evening.
Westfield, which trailed 5-2, just over five minutes into the third period, improved its record to 3-0 heading into its conference opener on Tuesday, Nov. 13, when it hosts Plymouth State. Stonehill falls to 2-4.
The Owls’ only lead came in overtime when junior Billy Miller ripped a low shot from the blue line with the puck going just inside the left post 2:42 into the stanza.
Seven of the nine goals were on power plays, including the game-winner. Westfield was the benefactor of a Stonehill game misconduct that carried over 3:07 into the OT stanza.
Stonehill took a 4-1 lead early in the third period on a goal by J.J. Sabin. Perreault made it 4-2 with freshman Dalton Jay recording his first of three assists, but Stonehill’s Bryan Rooney scored less than a minute later to make it 5-2.
Taylor Murphy scored his second goal of the game and Perreault followed with a power play goal with exactly 11 minutes remainlng in regulation to make it 5-4 The Owl captain then scored the equalizer with 1:37 on the third period clock.
