FITCHBURG – Westfield State women’s track and field won five individual events and swept the three relays to edge Bridgewater State for the title in the 2019 MASCAC Championship meet in Fitchburg Saturday.
Westfield won the meet with a team score of 227, while Bridgewater was a narrow second with 222. Worcester State was third at 154, with host Fitchburg a distant fourth with 23 points.
The Owls were paced by junior Lauren Gilderdale who won both the hammer (49.73m – 163′-02″) and the Discus (37.44m – 122-10), and took second in the shot put (12.12 – 39-09.25).
The Owls senior duo of Kerri Long and Lexi Popp also racked up points at the meet. They were both members of the Owls’ winning 4×100 and 4×400 relay units. Popp took the title in the 400 meters in 57.74, while Long was second in 59.82.
Popp added a third in 100 hurdles, second place in 400 hurdles, and second the in 200 meters.
Long took home third in long jump, third in triple jump, fifth in 200 meter, fourth in 100 hurdles, and third in 400 hurdles.
Other event winners for the Owls included Amy O’Sullivan (10,000 meters); Brianna Deloury (high jump) and Mackenzie Connor (pole vault).
The meet was held in conjunction with the Little East Conference championships, and is also scored as the “New England Alliance Championships” for the combined meet. The Owls placed second in the Alliance scoring, and Popp won the 400 meters and Gilderdale the discus in the combined meet.
