AGAWAM – 86-0!
The Westfield High School gymnastics team extended its win streak with yet another tri-meet victory, disposing the Agawam Brownies (130.075) and Hampshire (123.85) Thursday night. The Bombers (8-0) recorded their highest point total of the season with a 137.6.
“I like the direction we’re heading,” Westfield coach Joanne Hewins said. “We’re improving at every meet.”
Westfield’s Angela Bonavita (33.875) and Taryn Hamel (33.85) finished second and third, respectively, in the All-Around competition. Agawam’s Alyson Renaud won it with a 34.3.
Bonavita was first on the balance beam (9.25), and fourth on vault (8.225) and floor routine (8.6). Hamel placed second on vault (8.475), third on floor (8.775), and fifth on uneven bars (8.05) and beam (8.55).
Brendan Whitman captured first place on the vault (8.55) and floor (9.225). Josh Burrage was runner-up on the floor exercise with a 9.0.
On bars, Westfield swept the 2-4 spots with Kendal Neidig leading the way with an 8.35. Maeve Reynolds (8.25) and Sarah Hogan (8.15) took third and fourth, respectively. Hogan also finished fourth on the beam (8.85).
In another impressive showing, senior Emilie Matson scored a 9.1 on the balance beam, good for second. It was Matson’s second meet back from suffering a concussion injury 11 months ago.
Westfield will hold its “senior night” festivities Tuesday when the Minnechaug Falcons swoop into the Whip City. The meet is scheduled to begin inside the WHS gym at 6 p.m., with a ceremony honoring some 14 seniors expected around 5:45.
