WESTFIELD – Fans were singing the praises of the St. Mary High School boys’ soccer team Tuesday. Three players combined forces, scoring one goal apiece, and the Saints put together a truly special shutout of Pathfinder, 3-0, at Westfield Middle School South.
Padraig Smith, Matt Masciadrelli, and Aaron Blanchard each scored a goal for St. Mary. Saints’ goalie Jacob Butler, who has been delivering several key stops all season, made 25 saves in goal against Pathfinder.
“It was arguably our best game in two years,” said St. Mary coach Billy Lamirande, whose team won despite being short-handed. “Hopefully this propels us to a big game on Friday against Franklin Tech, who’s also another good team.”
Castor, Rams prevail
Southwick 4, Sabis 0
Brandon Castor (2 goals, 1 assist) led Southwick. Rams’ Connor Geddis finished with one goal and one assist, Kacper Kisala had a goal, and Austin Davis had an assist.
Southwick goalies Nick Chambers and Kyle Demaio combined for two saves and a shutout.
Westfield Technical Academy 3, Ware 0
Brad Nelson scored two goals, and Philip Lisyanyy had one as Westfield Tech posted another key league victory.
“We had some players in new positions today, and it was great to see their versatility,” Westfield Tech coach Kyle Dulude said. “(Our) goal is to get better each day … We have some nice momentum now.”
Josh Bosh earned two assists.

Lions second-half surge sinks Bombers
Ludlow 2, Westfield 0
Ludlow scored two goals in the second half to escape the Whip City with a victory. Mariano Goncalves scored the eventual game-winner midway through the second half, and Niss Pereira tacked on an insurance goal. Lions’ goalkeeper Abbie Terrinca (6 saves) earned a shutout.
Westfield goalie Lindsay Cousins made 16 saves.
Belardo-Heynigen connection pays off – twice
Gateway 2, South Hadley 0
Samantha Belardo scored twice – both times off passes from Jessica Van Heynigen – and Gateway blanked visiting South Hadley. Gators’ goalie Becca Herman (1 save) earned a shutout.
GYMNASTICS
Bombers avoid streak-buster
Westfield (131.85), Minnechaug (131.70), Chicopee Comp (117.10)
Minnechaug came within less than two-tenths of a point from ending Westfield’s decades-long winning streak in a season opener Tuesday. Gymnast Liz Walker and the Bombers did everything they could to preserve the era of domination.
Walker won top All-Around honors (34.25), finishing first on vault (8.4), uneven bars (8.7), and balance beam (8.75). She was fourth on her floor routine (8.4).
Madi Somppi took second on the floor exercise with an 8.7. Third-place finishers included Westfield’s Miranda Wozniak (All-Around, 32.6), Kealyn Matuczczak (vault, 8.15), and Mairead Hagan (bars, 8.5).
“The girls did some of the best routines I’ve seen them do,” Westfield coach Bethany Liquori said.

Bombers upend Pacers

Westfield’s Jack Hogan shot a 1-over 36 to lead all golfer at Tekoa Country Club. Matt Bonsall (39), Liam Whitman (40), and Ari Schwartz (41) also finished with impressive rounds of golf.
Willenborg wins gold; Rams win match
Southwick 20, St. Mary 4
St. Mary No. 1 golfer Luke Willenborg shot a 40 to claim three of St. Mary’s four points at Tekoa Country Club.
Jagger Turgeon (40), James Longhi (42), and Chris Molta (42) paved the way for a Southwick victory. The Rams completed their seven-match road trip 7-0 to improve to 11-1 overall, 9-0 league.

Carroll, Rams down Red Raiders

Southwick’s Bill Carroll and Jack Davis claimed the top two spots, finishing in 18:12 and 18:24, respectively. Sean Costello was fifth for the Rams in 20:06, and Matt Jansen was eighth (21:27).

Drohen leads Rams
Hampshire 19, Southwick 43
Hampshire ran away with the victory at Southwick’s 3.1 mile course. Red Raiders’ Sophia Prouty won the race in 20:35.
Southwick’s Becca Drohen took home silver with a 21:25 finish. Maggie Drohen also cracked the top 10, claiming eighth for the Rams in 23:06.

Autumn Metivier scored the game-winner in the second half to lift West Side. Terriers’ goalie Chloe Pastore (4 saves) pitched a shutout in net.
