NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Westfield State University men’s outdoor track and field team placed second in the Coast Guard Spring Invitational on Saturday, March 29.
WPI finished first in the 12-team invitational with 147.5 points followed by Westfield (134), Coast Guard (107), and Holy Cross (65).
The Owls had a number of fine early season outdoor efforts as they finished first in five events. Senior Zack Madera hit the tape first in the 200 meter dash (22.4), sophomore Matt Moussamih continued his steady middle distance running by winning the 800 meters (1:58.19), senior Mike Kelleher won the rugged 3000 meter steeplechase (9:55.74), and freshman Steve Sam took top honors in the discus (129-4). Also placing first was the 4 x 100 relay squad (Madera, John Tomlin, John Latour, Kyle Sullivan) with a clocking of 44.03.
Placing second for Westfield were sophomore Travon Godette in the javelin (178-2), and Chas Hodgdon in the steeplechase.
The Owls’ other top performers were: Tomlin (4th, 200), Sullivan (3rd, 400), Mike Stender (4th, 400), Tevin Cintron (4th, 800), Godette (7th, 110 hurdles), Steve Connolly (3rd, steeplechase), Adam Bourdon (5th, steeplechase), Shawn Luce (6th, steeplechase), 4 x 400 relay (3rd), Zack Delisle (6th, pole vault), Latour (4th, long jump; 7th, triple jump), Bobby Boire (8th, long jump), Wali Alston (5th, triple jump), Marcus Pettigrew (3rd, shot put), Sam (8th, shot put), and Jack Sheerin (4th, javelin).
WOMEN NEARLY CRACK TOP THREE: The Westfield State University women’s track and field team finished fourth at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday.
Division I Holy Cross racked up 248.5 points in the 11-team invitational, followed by Coast Guard (74), WPI (73), and Westfield (66).
Sophomore standout Naloti Palma led the Owls by earning points in three throwing events. Palma placed first in the shot put with a fine early season heave of 44-9 ½. She was third in the discus (110-9) and seventh in the hammer throw (127-9).
Also placing first for the Owls was the 4 x 400 relay squad (4:32.24). Individuals finishing second were sophomore Meg McNamara in the 100 hurdles (15.85) and junior Olivia Marshall in the 3000 steeplechase (12:17.22).
Westfield’s other top performers were: Alex Livingston (5th, hammer throw), Marie Gulino (6th, 200), Andrea Domings (6th, javelin), and the 4 x 100 relay squad (3rd).
