Ahoy! Owls Scuttle Buccaneers, 15-6

BUZZARDS BAY – Westfield State senior midfielder Sam Donohoe (Pepperell, Mass.) scored six goals to lead the way, as Westfield State topped Mass Maritime, 15-6 in a non-conference women’s lacrosse game on Thursday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Westfield improved to 7-1 on the season, and have won seven straight while MMA is now 0-3.
Westfield scored four unanswered goals to open the scoring in the game. The Owls led 8-4 at the half, then netted the first four goals of the second half, including two each from Donohoe and Nicole Rinkus (Pembroke, Mass.), to put the game out of reach. Donohoe now has 98 career goals, and currently sits 11th on the Owls career goal-scoring list.
Rinkus finished with three goals, with Cassidy Harvey (Niskayuna, N.Y.) addiing three goals and four assists. Between the pipes, first-year Kara Banagan (Niskayuna, N.Y.) picked up her fifth win of the season making two saves and allowing four goals in 30 minutes of work. Lily Sears (Medway, Mass.) relieved Banagan at the half allowing two goals and making five saves.
For MMA, senior captain Anna Deely (Barnstable, Mass) scored a team-high three goals, won a game-high seven draw controls, picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover in the loss. Senior captain Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass), junior captain Alyssa DiScipio (Braintree, Mass) and freshman Ally Reddish (Canton, Mass) each scored a goal for the Bucs. Goalie Aviva Beringhause (Providence, R.I.) made 13 saves and allowed 15 goals. She also picked up a game-high five ground balls.
