WESTFIELD – Bridgewater State’s Samantha Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) scored 2:44 into overtime to lift the visiting Bears to a 2-1 win over Westfield State at Alumni Field on Saturday.
In the 7 vs 7 sudden-death overtime period, Hayes broke in 1-on-1 against Westfield State goalkeeper Megan Fountaine (Scituate, Mass.) and beat her for the game winner.
Westfield had taken a 1-0 lead 16:38 into the first half on Carly Zona’s goal on a penalty corner feed from Rachel Testa (Oakmont/Westminster, Mass.).
Bridgewater tied the game at 1-1 on Julianne Kilduff’s (Bellingham, Mass.) marker 1:59 into the second half.
Fountaine finished with 14 saves for the Owls, while Allison Chappell (Bridgewater-Raynham/Bridgewater, Mass.) stopped seven shots for the Bears.
Westfield falls from the ranks of the unbeaten, dropping to 3-1, 1-1 in the Little East Conference. Bridgewater improves to 3-1 and 1-1 in the LEC.
Bridgewater will next host Plymouth State on Saturday, September 17 in a key LEC matchup. Westfield will next step out of conference to play at Johnson and Wales (RI) University on Tuesday night. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
