Bombers, Hewins go out on top

WILBRAHAM – The Westfield High School gymnastics team has done it again.
Westfield won its seventh straight west sectional, and improved its win streak to 125-0 with another blistering assault on the rest of the western part of the state Friday night at Minnechaug Regional High School.
Westfield placed first with a total team score of 138.025. Minnechaug was second with a 136.3, followed by Chicopee Comp (131.425), Agawam (127.925), and Hampshire (122.7).
“It was one of the most memorable nights of my life,” said Westfield coach Joanne Hewins, who recently announced her retirement following season’s end. “I’m so proud of my kids. It was a nice ending.”
Westfield senior gymnast Taryn Hamel capped off a sensational season, winning her seventh All-Around competition.
Hamel placed first with an All-Around score of 35.15. Minnechaug’s Mackenzie Lee (35.050) and Sarah O’Brien (34.950) were second and third, respectively. Agawam’s Alison Renaud (34.325) placed fourth, and Comp’s Sabrina Alekseyenko was fifth (33.975).
Hamel’s scores on each event were as follows: vault (8.4), uneven bars (8.45), balance beam (9.25), and floor exercise (9.05).
