Bouncing ahead

HUNTINGTON – With the last kicks, passes, and headers of soccer season having fallen into the rearview mirror, this winter’s high school sports season is set to bounce into action.
Area sports teams hit the local basketball courts for the first time Monday in search of that next big star. That might mean starting from the bottom to the top at a small school in Huntington.
“I don’t know what to expect,” said Gateway boys’ basketball coach Kevin McVeigh, who hinted that this year may be a bit of a rebuilding one.
Although he said the team may lack overall size, early indications are that the program’s numbers are at good levels.
Gateway will tip off the regular season Dec. 7 at home against John J. Duggan Academy at 6:30 p.m.
On Sat., Dec. 9, the Gateway wrestling team will participate in the Monument Mountain Duals in Great Barrington. The Gators’ girls’ hoops team travels to the Whip City to take on the Westfield Technical Academy Tigers in their season opener Dec. 11.
