WESTFIELD – The Westfield and St. Mary high school boys’ tennis teams may have both picked up “L’s” on Monday, but for three individuals the “W’s” were bigger than ever.
Central 3, St. Mary 2
Zach Brown defeated Ian Patrianca 6-1, 6-3 and Zach Slepchuk downed Sluaiman Sesay 7-6, (7-3), 6-2 at first and second singles, respectively, to remain unbeaten for St. Mary’s. The two Saints improved to 6-0.
“They are both having tremendous seasons,” St. Mary coach Ray Neilsen said, following the victory at Municipal Playground Courts.
St. Mary’s Corey Clemente lost at third singles, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. Jake Neilsen and Kieran O’Donnell also lost a tough match at second doubles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Saints, as a team, fell to 3-3.
Longmeadow 4, Westfield 1
Westfield picked up the team’s lone victory at first singles when senior foreign exchange student, Loeiz Briand, quickly dispatched with Longmeadow’s top player, Ross Kamin, 6-1, 6-0, to remain unbeaten at 8-0.
“It was an excellent day for Loeiz,” Westfield coach John Morizio said. “It was really a decisive win for (him). …He is really setting himself up to be one of the top seeds in the Western Massachusetts tournament. Ross Kamin was a formidable opponent, who he beat convincingly.”
Jacob Barbeiri lost a tough match at third singles, 6-7, (5-7), 7-6, (7-4), 10-7, as his opponent, Nate Wiseman rallied from being down match points three times in the second set before winning the supertiebreaker.
