WESTFIELD – It is often said that there is a first time for everything, but after Friday’s contest, St. Mary’s High School junior softball pitcher Audrey Burke likely hopes it is not the last.
Burke tossed her first complete game, recording 11 strikeouts in a two-hitter that resulted in a 7-5 win over Westfield Technical Academy at Whitney Field.
“Softball is my favorite sport so it kind of sucked not playing,” Burke said, regarding a lost 2020 season to Covid. “(I made it through today) with my team, with confidence, and everybody cheering each other along.”
Other than the walks – – Burke issued 10 free passes – – and a few costly errors made by Westfield Tech, it truly was a pitcher’s duel of sorts. Tigers pitcher Allyssa Slack came on in relief to strike out seven batters over the game’s final six innings. It was an equally impressive outing as she was battling a sore shoulder throughout.
“I felt very confident on the mound with (catcher) Rylie (Nimchick) behind me,” Slack said.
It was a big first inning for St. Mary’s, one that went a long way in deciding the victor.
Burke led off the game with a walk, stole second base, and eventually came around to score when Allie Goodreau plated her with a ground out off Westfield Tech’s starter. Paige Hutkoski and Anita Bialas reached on consecutive singles. A bunt single resulted in the team’s second and third runs. In the next at-bat, Lilly Nadier hit the ball to the shortstop. An error led to another run. Emma Bialas hit a fielder’s choice RBI to make it 5-0.
Westfield Tech chipped away at the lead. Consecutive bases loaded walks from Ava Montovani and Lauren Beaulieau in the bottom of the first inning made it 5-2. In the third inning, Cassie Girroir reached on a double and scored on an error when Allyssa Slack hit the ball to the pitcher and it was misplayed.
St. Mary’s recouped one of those runs in the fifth inning when Burke singled, stole second, advanced to third base on an Allie Goodreau ground out, and scored on Hutkoski’s single through the right side of the infield.
Westfield Tech countered with two more runs in the fifth. The Tigers loaded the bases with consecutive walks from Girroir and Slack, and a Rylie Nimchich single. With two outs, a run-scoring error and Caprice Allen run-scoring hit made it 6-5.
St. Mary’s scored an insurance run in the seventh. Burke singled, stole second base and scored on an error.
“The girls really shook the rust off after being out of there for two years,” St. Mary’s softball coach Mike Kosinski said. “They really played a great game. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Seklecki delivers flawless effort

St. Mary’s lost a tough match that saw Catherine Seklecki record its only win. Seklecki won in the third singles position. Her forehand strokes were nearly flawless as she delivered blistering cross-court shots to win her match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. The Saints play their next match at home on Tuesday against Palmer.
