City woman held in knife assault

WESTFIELD – A city woman was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail in Westfield District Court yesterday during her arraignment on charges stemming for a knife assault.
Darlene A. Morse, 46, of 3 Jefferson St., is currently being held at the Western Massachusetts Women’s Correction Center while awaiting her next court appearance slated for Jan. 17, 2013.
Morse was taken into custody Monday night after a citizen frantically requested police assistance at 7:35 p.m., reporting a male was bleeding from an abdominal wound.
Officer Patrick M. Shea located the victim, identified as David E. Phillips, sitting on the porch of house next to his 3 Jefferson St. residence, bleeding from a stab wound to his lower abdomen. Shea rendered medical assistance, while an ambulance arrived to transport the victim for medical treatment.
Phillips stated that his girlfriend went crazy and stabbed him.
Shea approached the female, identified as Morse, who stated the two were involved in a domestic dispute and that Phillips threw their dinner around the living room.
Morse stated that she went into the kitchen to begin preparing something else for dinner when Phillips followed her into the kitchen. Morse stated that Phillips grabbed her hands while she was holding the knife and stabbed himself.
The officer asked Morse whose hand was holding the knife when the stabbing occurred and she said her hand.
Morse is charged with assault and battery in a domestic relationship, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, to wit a kitchen knife, and attempted murder.
Phillips was transported to the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where he was admitted for treatment and later released. Court documents state that Phillips required surgery to treat the stomach wound.
Judge Philip A. Contant set the $1,000 bail because of the severity of the charges and because of Morse’s past conviction and the fact that she failed to appear in court in the past to answer previous charges.
