Commercial distributes championship success

WESTFIELD – After two consecutive Westfield Majors Little League Baseball championship appearances, Commercial Distributing finally broke through in its third.
Commercial defeated Hastie Fence 7-3 in five rain-shortened innings to claim the city’s Majors title Friday night at Ralph E. Sanville Memorial Field on Cross Street.

“We could have went in with a defeatist attitude, but we put that behind us,” Commercial Distributing coach Mike Raposo told his players after the championship victory.
Commercial fell to Moose Club and Kiwanis in 2015 and ’16.
“This was for all the kids who got here but didn’t come up on the winning side,” Raposo told The Westfield News.
Commercial opened up with the lead Friday when Kyle Scherpa blasted a two-run homer in the first inning. Hastie surged ahead in the fourth 3-2, the key hit being a two-run double from Cody Collins.
In the fifth, Commercial reclaimed the lead for good. Jay Scherpa tied the game 3-all with an RBI double. Two-run doubles from Jax Grady and Johnny Blasé gave Commercial an insurmountable cushion.
Commercial starting pitcher Jay Scherpa, who tossed a perfect game during the regular season, allowed just two hits to Hastie. He struck out 10 batters.
