WESTFIELD – The Greater Westfield Babe Ruth League recently completed its 62nd year of baseball in Westfield. The 2019 season had 83 players competing on six highly competitive teams. The league is comprised of players from Southwick, Agawam, Tolland, Huntington, Southampton, and Westfield.
The 2019 season had the Cortina Tile team complete their regular season with a first place record of 11-3. ITI finished a close second at 9-6.
Advance Manufacturing (3rd place), Berkshire Insurance Group (4th), Westfield Bank (5th), and The Batter’s Box (6th) rounded out the standings.
While the regular season is over, there is a lot more baseball to be played.
Now, the teams head into the Dan Welch City Cup playoffs where anything can happen. Everyone is 0-0, and vying for the City Cup Championship. Teams that may not have had full access to their ace pitches who sometimes are limited to pitch in the regular season due to high school commitments are now ready for mound action in the playoffs.
According to league president, Dan Welch, the regular season champ has more often than not, been unseated for the City Cup title.
The City Cup’s double-elimination playoffs kick off Sun., June 9 with doubleheader action games at Bullens Field at 2 and 5 p.m. The teams scheduled to compete in the opening round games will be posted Thursday night. Cortina Tile and ITI will earn first round byes.

NOTES: As soon as the Dan Welch City Cup playoffs wrap up action, local players will turn to summer league play in the Pioneer Valley Summer League. This summer league will lead up to two exciting Babe Ruth tournaments in Westfield this summer. On July 19–24, the league will host the 15-Year-Old Babe Ruth New England Regional Tournament and then in August the league will host the 2019 13-Year-Old Babe Ruth World Series August 8-15 at Bullens Field. – Courtesy of Greater Westfield Babe Ruth Baseball
