WESTFIELD – Construction has begun for Five Below to come to the Westgate Plaza, in the space formerly occupied by Olympia Sports and the Rent a Center, which relocated.

Five Below, which has 900 stories in 36 states, offers trendy products loved by tweens, teens and beyond, with the majority of items prices from $1 to $5, according to its website.

Community Development Director Peter J. Miller said he first learned of their interest in the space in December, and with the start of construction, the plaza is getting a little bit of a makeover. “Between them and the Big Y gas station, it’s good to see some activity in the corridor,” he said.

Building Superintendent Carissa Lissee said the store has its building permit, electrical permit, and sprinkler permit, and although there is no estimated opening date, they have started construction.

Lissee said they are combining the two spaces into one, and will be renovating 8,500 square feet of retail space.
