Gators begin tourney run

HUNTINGTON – On Monday, the Westfield Technical Academy boys’ soccer team delivered an amazing effort, and the school its second state vocational championship in three years.
The Tigers set the stage for what will likely shape up as another fantastic postseason.
A potential matchup looms against another area team, the Gateway Gators. Seventh-seeded Gateway (15-1-2) opens the Division 4 tournament against visiting No. 10 PVCHS (13-4-1) Wednesday at 6 p.m.

If the Gators survive, they will move on to face the tournament’s No. 2 seed, the Lenox Millionaires (11-5-2) in a quarterfinal round contest.
Westfield Tech will take on the winner of No. 6 St. Joe’s (10-1-5)-No. 10 McCann Tech (8-7-3) in the other D4 quarterfinal Friday at Bullens Field at 4:30. The Tigers and Gators, assuming they both survive, would meet in the semis.
Westfield Tech’s opener is the first of a quarterfinal double header at Bullens that night as top-seeded Westfield (11-3-3) hosts No. 8 Chicopee (7-7-4)/No. 9 West Springfield (7-7-4) in a D1 matchup in the nightcap at 7.
Elsewhere that night, the Westfield High School gymnastics team looks to extend its decade-long unbeaten streak with yet another west sectional championship. This year’s championship meet will be held at Chicopee Comprehensive High School, beginning at 6 p.m.
Also, the Westfield Bombers will take on the Chicopee Pacers in Friday night football at Szot Park in Chicopee at 7 p.m.
