WESTFIELD – The grades are in at the quarter mark for the Westfield High School softball team and the Bombers have soaring marks.
Westfield improved to 3-0 Wednesday behind a solid outing from starting pitcher Erin Gour and an opportunistic offense, which preyed on several Minnechaug mistakes. The Bombers enjoyed a mercy-rule victory, defeating the Falcons in five innings, 12-0.
Gour allowed just consecutive hits to Minnechaug’s Camryn Baroni and Mackenzie Blair in the first inning and hit a batter in the second inning. A fourth batter reached on an infield error in the fourth. She recorded a total of eight strikeouts.
“We’re starving for the ball,” Gour said, referencing the long layoff and enthusiasm to compete now on a daily basis. “We’re putting in a lot of effort and it’s paying off.”
Blair kept Westfield off balance at the plate early on, retiring six of the first seven batters she faced before it all unraveled for Minnechaug.
Ali Rehor collected Westfield’s first hit and first run in the third inning. Rehor belted a double to deep right center field. A passed ball and wild pitch resulted in a 1-0 lead. Ciara Toporowski walked, stole second and advanced to third base with a Kenzie Raymond ground out. Carly James walked and stole second. Gour walked to load the bases. One run scored on a wild pitch. Two more runs came in on a passed ball. A run-scoring line drive single to center field from Moja Premny made it 5-0.
Westfield continued to go on the attack, putting Minnechaug back on its heels. The Falcons were plagued by walks, passed palls, and wild pitches; hit a batter; and allowed a few hits – – all in the fourth. The Bombers led 9-0 by inning’s end.
Toporowski manufactured a Westfield run with one out in the fifth. She doubled, stole third base and scored on a passed ball. Kenzie Raymond launched a towering home run over the center field fence. Gour hit a run-scoring base knock that ended it.
“We’re building our own culture here right now,” Westfield High School softball first-year head coach Kyle Dulude said. “We’re going to keep pushing forward, live every day like what we’re doing is not good enough to push ourselves to become better, and believe in ourselves. It’s just about preparing, staying together, building the unity, having that chemistry amongst us – – we’re young, only two seniors – – so we have a lot of optimism for the future but we’re really focusing on the day to day. Each of us is becoming individually better so we’re better as a team.”

Pope Francis’s Merdith Ravizza had nine goals and two assists and the Cardinals handed St. Mary’s its first loss of the season. The Saints fell to 1-1.
St. Mary’s Skylar Duda recorded a hat trick. Katarzyna Wisnauckas scored two goals. Serena Nicolle, Summer Duda and Emma Archambault had one goal apiece.
Mia Slack and Abby Hennessy logged six saves apiece.
