Driverless vehicle crashes

WESTFIELD – A Southampton man escaped serious injury early Friday morning when he fell out of his Jeep while cresting Clay Hill and his vehicle then continued – unoccupied – until it struck the sign of a nearby restaurant.
City police report that a caller reported the accident at 1:55 a.m. and officer Ricky Maciorowski was dispatched to investigate the crash.
Maciorowski reports that he found that the operator of a 2007 Jeep Wrangler, Jonathan T. Freniere, of 27 Montgomery Road, Southampton, had lost control of his vehicle and fallen from the doorless Jeep near the intersection of Arch Road.
The driverless Jeep then continued on Southampton Road until it came to a rest after striking a sign at the Friendly restaurant on the corner of Friendly Way.
Maciorowski reports that witnesses to the accident pulled Freniere from the roadway on to the grounds of a gas station where a state trooper also reported the accident and requested an ambulance.
Freniere was transported by Fire Department ambulance to Baystate Medical Center where he was treated and released.
