EAST LONGMEADOW – The Westfield High School swimming and diving program continued its push toward championship season.
Westfield split Thursday’s meet against East Longmeadow with the Bombers’ girls defeating the Spartans 64-38. The Whip City boys lost 55-45.
“The boys fought valiantly but came up short because we’re so small (in terms of numbers),” Westfield coach Tom Lewis said.
For Westfield, James Wagner posted a career-high 194.60 points to finish tops in the diving competition, and Nick Rosso won the 200 individual medley (2:10.04) and 100 butterfly (55.44).
The Bombers’ girls posted several firsts, including dual victories from Lauren Longley (50 freestyle, 27.33; 500 free, 5:26.87), and one from Kelsey Johnstone (100 free, 57.13).
Westfield swept the relay races, winning the medley relay (Kate McCabe, Rachel Charette, Longley, Sara Russell) in 2:02.75, 200 free relay (Hannah Ditto, McCabe, Charette, Kelsey Johnstone) in 1:49.11, and 400 free relay (Longley, Ditto, Charette, Johnstone) in 3:55.46, a state qualifying time.
Several other swimmers punched their ticket to the championships (WMass, states) with solid swims.
