WESTFIELD – MCLA struck for four second-half goals to defeat Westfield State University, 4-0, in Massachusetts State Collegiate men’s soccer action on Saturday.
MCLA notched its first conference victory (1-3-1) and improved to 4-7-1 overall. Westfield is 2-3 and 4-9.
Westfield State had an opportunity to take to the lead in the 53rd minute but MCLA goalie Matt Robinson made an outstanding save on a penalty kick.
Three minutes later, MCLA leading scorer Dylan Pereira (11 goals this season) tallied the game-winning goal with an assist from Edward Boateng.
MCLA took a 2-0 lead in the 71st minute on a goal by Mitch Candelet, then scored two more goals in the final 10 minutes. Drew Webster scored in the 80th minute and Boateng found the back on the net in the 88th minute.
Westfield State outshot MCLA, 13-12, and the Owls also led in penalty corners, 6-2. Both goalies (Robinson and Westfield’s Kris Carrington) recorded four saves.
