WESTFIELD – Westfield State University men’s soccer fell 2-1 to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in a hard-fought double-overtime Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference battle at Alumni Field Saturday.
Trailblazers senior Anthony Basile (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored 13:33 into the first half of the game off a free kick in center field resulting in a 1-0 MCLA lead.
Down the stretch, Westfield State’s sophomore Brodie Keene (Agawam, Mass.) trickled a shot past junior goalkeeper Kamron Anderson (Springfield, Mass. / Springfield Central) after an assist by senior Joey Pantuosco (Somers, Conn.) to knot the game at 1-1 in the 85th minute.
It wasn’t until double overtime and the 100th minute of the match, when Trailblazers’ senior Jesse Moore (Castleton, NY/ Maple Hill) made a diving header from the right side of the field shooting the ball into the net resulting in a 2-1 final score.
MCLA led 20-7 in total shots, 11-4 shots on goal and 9-2 in corner kicks.
Owls’ keeper Alex Kraver (West Springfield, Mass.) played 100 minutes, making nine saves on the day and allowing one goal. Junior goalkeeper Marc Patnaude (North Andover, Mass.) played the last 15 minutes and allowed one goal in net.
Anderson played all 115 minutes of the game and made three saves and allowed one goal for the Trailblazers.
The Owls fall to 5-4-1, 1-1-1 in the MASCAC, while the Trailblazers improve to 5-4-1 and 2-0-1 in the MASCAC.
Westfield State will host Framingham State in a conference match Saturday, October eighth at 1:00 p.m.
