No. 4 Amherst outshoots WSU

WESTFIELD – Senior guard Connor Green (Phillips Exeter/Bedford, N.H.) scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead #4 ranked Amherst College to an 89-65 win over Westfield State University in a non-conference men’s basketball game at the Woodward Center on Tuesday evening.
Westfield kept the game within striking distance through most of the first half. Westfield cut the Lord Jeffs lead to 37-32 after an Allister Williams (Bedford/Boston, Mass.) three-pointer with 2:15 to play in the opening stanza. Amherst netted the last six points of the frame and led 43-32 at the half.
The Jeffs pulled away with a 21-5 burst early in the second half. Michael Riopel(Broadwater Academy/Nassawadox, Va.) netted a pair of free throws with 12:01 left in the game to give Amherst a 67-40 lead. Jeff Racy made four three-point baskets in the decisive run.
Green led five Amherst players in double figures. Racy added 20, Johnny McCarthy (Noble and Greenough/Medfield, Mass.) netted 12, and David George (Blair Academy/ Philadelphia, Pa.) and Riopel scored 10 each. The Lord Jeffs (4-0) shot a blistering 43.2 percent from three-point range (16-37).
Westfield was led by 14 points from Jesus Sanchez (Holderness School/Springfield, Mass.) and 11 points and six rebounds from Shane Pasquantonio (Ashland/Ashland, Mass.). Williams scored seven points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Owls (3-5).
Both teams will next play non-conference games, Westfield State will play at Western Connecticut State on Thursday at 7 p.m. while Amherst will play at Emerson College on Saturday at 1 p.m. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
